Heart Centred Healing & Yoga

Yoga Teacher

I was introduced to yoga fifteen years ago when I suffered with back problems. Little did I know that this would change the course of my life and set me on a new path. It wasn’t long before my back was healed – it was incredible to be pain free! Not only did I feel physically better but I felt empowered and purposeful, and so began my journey with yoga.

My practice continued to grow and evolve over the years and in 2014 I travelled to Bali to undertake my first 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training intensive. In 2015, I went back and trained in Anusara Yoga with Bridget Woods Kramer. As I have taught and practiced I’ve come to understand the more subtle aspects and benefits of a heart centred approach. I won a 200 hour YTT in Rishikesh with Path of Yoga which involved lots of inner work as well as yogic fundamentals. As my personal practice has evolved I’ve realised that the western approach of specific alignment and complicated shapes has to evolve too – far too many people have suffered injuries through the practice or felt defeated and substandard by their inability to achieve something which is actually not viable with their bone structure! Through yoga we need to turn our awareness inwards and develop our sense of “self-awareness” so that we can sense and feel what is good for our body and what is not. As we begin to take control of our bodies, this awareness expands into all parts of our being – physical, mental and emotional. We learn to slow down and listen rather than trying to cover over our inner voice with layers of distractions and demands. We slowly begin to unravel the truth of who we are to see the beauty of our true nature.

There have been many ups and many downs on this journey but I have continued to grow and develop as a student and teacher with the deepest desire to share all that I have learned and experienced with others.

What is Yoga?

Yoga is a holistic system which gives us the tools to work on the many layers of our being – it is not just a physical approach but it teaches us how to develop our self awareness and understanding of our physical, emotional and mental states so that we can take over mastery and control of our mind and body rather than being a slave to all external suggestion and stimuli. By learning to reconnect with what is going on inside we begin to understand and recognise what it actually is that we need in each moment rather than waiting for something outside to instruct us. The physical benefits of strength, flexibility and balance are really just a wonderful by-product of the whole. As we move deeper into the practice we become more mindful and we are more able to deal with every day experiences – we realise how “reactive” we are when we are not focused on the present moment. Yoga works on restoring balance and harmony through movement of the body and breath and meditation.

There are many different types of yoga from the more dynamic Ashtanga and Vinyasa to the slower, gentle Yin and Restorative. Each type has its place in the current world. One must explore and be curious to find out what their body needs. It is important to remember that we are constantly changing and evolving, so what suits us today may not be what we need tomorrow…

Vinyasa, Hatha & Yin Yoga

Vinyasa is the synchronisation of breath and movement in a sequence which flows from one asana/posture into the next. A vinyasa sequence may be strong and dynamic or it may be gentle and mindful. The sequences are creative and often have a theme – this may be a physical theme or more etheric theme. It teaches us to become more aware of how we move and align ourselves – to move with purpose and focus. As yoga’s popularity has grown in the West so too has the understanding that not all bodies are the same and trying to force one’s body in to a specific shape can often result in injury and so yoga has begun to evolve into a more embodied practice of knowing one’s own body and how to move it safely and mindfully. Dynamic yoga is a yang form of yoga.

Yin yoga is a softer more contemplative system which invites us to look within – to explore with curiosity while resting in stillness. Though the postures may be considered easy this is a challenging practice where we allow the deeper-seated aspects of ourselves to rise to the surface and be seen so that if necessary, they may be released and new pathways may be created restoring balance. In Yin yoga we work on the appropriate stretching and releasing of connective tissue.

It is important to remember that Yin and Yang are balancing aspects of the same whole – we cannot have one without the other… In any yoga practice, there is always yin and yang but we must remember the need to balance the two so we shouldn’t always do yang dynamic practices or slow yin practices, but rather listen to what our body needs and follow accordingly.

Reiki Energy Healing

Reiki is a form of energy healing. It is a tradition that was founded by Dr Mikao Usui. Our world and all that it contains is formed of energy. It nourishes us and all living things. When there is balance and harmony in our energy field we feel physically, mentally and emotionally healthy, however, in this ever-demanding world it is difficult to find and maintain that sense of well-being and the disharmony may show up in a multitude of ways.

The attuned practitioner acts as a conduit for the universal energy to work through in order to restore balance and harmony. The healing techniques are used on a physical, mental and emotional level depending on the needs of the client. It can be used alongside conventional and alternative medicine.

Reflexology

Reflexology works primarily with reflexes and through the nervous system. It is a non-invasive natural system of stress reduction and relaxation based on the principle that the body is reflected on the feet, hands and outer ears through reflexes found in these areas. The application of pressure to reflexes and the resultant stimulation sent via the nerve pathways, produces physiological change in the body. Reflexology gently nudges the body towards better functioning by improving oxygenation of cells, lymphatic drainage, and venous circulation through the relaxation process.

Meditation

Meditation is a practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing their mind on a particular object, thought or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.

Meditation is the technique of focusing the mind with attention and awareness to discover inner stillness. It has a profound effect both physiologically and psychologically, promoting coherence between our physical, mental and emotional bodies.

Deep Tissue & Swedish Massage

Swedish massage, also known as classic massage, is based on traditional massage techniques using long, even strokes and deep circular movements to help you unwind, de-stress and relieve superficial muscle tension while boosting your immune system. Massage offers a range of health benefits from improved pain management, enhanced circulation as well as a sense of deep relaxation.

Deep tissue massage uses techniques to work below the superficial connective tissue to relieve deeper restrictions and tension of the muscles, tendons and ligaments. It uses a combination of classic massage strokes with a more intense pressure, incorporating the use of knuckles, forearms and elbows for deeper manipulation of the tissues.

Aromatherapy massage

Aromatherapy massage is a gentle and relaxing form of massage in which the therapist blends a specific combination of essential oils to treat the client’s individual requirements.

The oils are very powerful and enter the body via the bloodstream as well as the olfactory system to work on the nervous system creating a sense of calm and relaxation. It also aids detoxification, digestion and boosts the immune system. It is known to have a direct effect on muscles and tension and can be used to in the treatment of a number of physiological conditions.

Meridian Energetics

Meridian Energetics is a highly developed healing modality based on the 12 chakra system which works on the etheric body. The etheric body is an exact energetic blueprint of the physical body. It is the energy body which surrounds the physical body. It works on the meridians similar to those described in Chinese medicine, as well as on the energy centres. The etheric body receives the universal life force energy, prana, chi, and transmits this to the physical body. Imbalance and blockages manifest her before the physical body and this is why ME works on the etheric body to restore balance and harmony, balancing the yin/yang aspects and the masculine/feminine energy.

The ME healing techniques work on many levels:

  • Removing blockages
  • Dysfunctional patterns
  • Addictions
  • Negative thought patterns and beliefs
  • Repressed emotions
  • Old programming
  • Facilitates heart centre opeining and development of the 12 chakra system
